A. Completed projects: 1) Socio-economic Profiling and Environmental Study of Four Protected Areas in Cebu Island
2) Sexual Behavior and Family Planning Decisions among Filipino Adolescents:
Parent-Child Communication, Maternal Behavior and Community Influences
Examined the effects of parent-child communication, maternal behavior, peer and community influences on adolescent girls’ sexual and family planning attitudes and decisions using data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS).
3) Impact of Early Childhood Nutrition on School Attainment and Child Labor in Cebu, Philippines
Utilized and built on data collected in the 1994 CLHNS to examine childhood nutrition and its effect on the children’s school achievement and participation in the work force.
4) Development of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors and Immune Status in Filipino Adolescents:
Long Term Consequences of Prenatal and Early Infant Growth Restriction
Expanded the 1998 CLHNS to collect and examine data on the effects of intrauterine and early childhood malnutrition and the development of risk factors for chronic disease and immunity in adolescents.
5) Unmet Needs for Adolescent Health Services in Metro Cebu, Philippines
Conducted a follow-up study involving adolescent girls and their mothers/caretakers who are part of the CLHNS sample to examine their perceptions, knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to their perceived and actual health needs.
6) Multi-Indicator Cluster Survey for Cebu Province
Collected information on health indicators for the purpose of improving the quality of service delivery of the public health care system.
7) Case Study on Population Dynamics, Land Availability and Changing Land Tenure Systems
Conducted case studies of various agricultural communities in the country to investigate interrelationships between population dynamics and the transformation of agricultural structures.
8) Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Survey in Region 7
Collected data in Region 7 for the national follow-up study on young adults’ fertility and sexuality behavior.
9) Cebu: A Demographic and Socioeconomic Profile Based on the 2000 Census
Published a book describing the demographic and socioeconomic profiles of Cebu province, Metro Cebu, and its component cities, municipalities, and barangays based on the 2000 Census of Population and Housing to be used by local government units (LGUs) in Cebu for planning and program development purposes.
10) UNICEF KAPB Research on HIV/AIDS (Cebu and Negros Oriental provinces)
Collected data on knowledge, attitudes, practices, and behavior on HIV/AIDS and sexual health among adolescents in Cebu and Negros Oriental provinces
11) Baseline Study and Longitudinal Evaluation Study of the Effects of Early Childhood Interventions
on Children’s Physiological, Cognitive, and Social Development
Documented the state of early childhood development prior to ECD Project implementation and, subsequently, conducted intensive assessment of the immediate and long-term impact of the Philippine ECD Project.
12) First and Second Series of Symposia on Population and Development Links in the Philippines
Conducted a series of symposia in the Visayas and Mindanao on population trends and development links to inform and initiate dialogue with the religious sector, particularly with the Archdiocese and the members of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.
B. Ongoing projects: 1) Effect of Health on Education and Work of Filipino Youth
Builds on the longitudinal data from the CLHNS that started in 1983, this study will conduct two follow-up surveys (2002 and 2005) to examine health and nutrition effects on educational attainment, work patterns, and wages of young adults in Cebu, Philippines.
2) Developmental Determinants of Young Adult Risk Factors for Aging-related Chronic Diseases
Expands the 2005 CLHNS follow up survey by collecting and analyzing biomarkers (blood samples) for examining age-related chronic diseases
3) Enhancing the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey
Expands the 2005 CLHNS follow up survey to include interviews of the husbands of respondents who are mothers, and collect saliva samples (cortisol stress test) from the youth respondents.
4) Filipino Early Childhood Development: Longitudinal Analysis
An extension of the geographic and substantive coverage of the Baseline and Longitudinal Evaluation Studies of the Philippine Early Childhood Development Project (ECD) with focus on the analysis of longitudinal pre-and post-policy changes in household and service provider behavior with respect to ECD programs.
5) Parental Impact on Filipino Early Childhood Development
Investigate the impact of parental background on early childhood development in the Philippines.
