Long before multinational poll survey outfits made the news for controversial demographic data, the University of San Carlos Office of Population Studies (OPS) has been quietly keeping an eye on the baby boom and the social weather, lest a storm would come unspotted.

Founded in 1971, it initially functioned within the University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Created in response to the government’s call for greater involvement of the academe in population issues, OPS is committed to undertake:

  • research in population and related issues
  • systematic teaching of population and related courses;
  • and development of academic and technical staff for population research and teaching activities.
